The Application Process
Stage 1:
Applicant inquiries are answered by sending them a copy of the Application Process and a copy of Is a NEWSD Dog Right For You?.
In order to obtain an application form the applicant must submit a written request for a Service Dog (a Letter of Interest) along with the signed slips attesting that he has read the two documents mentioned above.

We do have the option of applying for a “Home Helper” dog. These dogs do not have public access, however are trained to perform tasks around the home.

Stage 2 of the application process varies somewhat for the Home Helper. They are not required to take the ADI test and Team Training is modified to the home setting.
We send the application materials. Please indicate here if you are interested in the Home Helper option.
The applicant completes the application and submits it with the $25 (non refundable) fee.
We review the application. This may include a telephone call to the applicant.
We schedule qualified applicants for a personal interview.
We check the applicant’s personal and medical references.

After review we notify the applicant that Stage 1 is complete and indicate whether the applicant is eligible for Stage 2.
Stage 2:
A period of several months up to two years may pass before we contact you about pre-matching with a Service Dog.
At that time another interview will be required, to see how the applicant’s situation might have changed.
We then invite all applicants to work with potential matches.
We let you know when a match has been made and the dates for the Team Training course.
Prior to Team Training applicants attend an orientation course about canine development and learning, our training methods, and the responsibilities of working with and caring for a N.E.W.S.D. Service Dog.
.
Team Training begins. Lasting from three to five weeks, this intensive course prepares the applicant and Service Dog to work together as a team.

Graduation from Team Training.
With the assistance of the NEWSD Follow-up Staff you continue training in your home, work place, public locations, and possibly by telephone consultation. Time and frequency of follow-up varies for each graduate based on their individual needs. The schedule will include at least monthly contact for one year after placement.
By the end of the first year the graduate teams have an opportunity to take the ADI Public Access Test.
Ownership of the dog will be transferred to the recipient when performance in follow-up has been deemed satisfactory and the team has successfully passed the Assistance Dog International Public Access Test.

Please cut off, sign, date, and return this portion with your Letter of Interest.

I have received and read the Application Process form.
